Hello everyone! This is an email to invite you to travel with a group of people to the Re-envisioning
Relationships conference in Peterborough
(see conference description below). The
conference runs this Friday to this Sunday. Registration is $10 for students – visit
http://www.trentu.ca/academic/nativestudies/alliances/conference_hm.html
for more details and a registration form.OPIRG will be paying for our vehicle, so this is a great, cheap opportunity. We will be stopping in Toronto on the way to participate in a picket
against repression in Oaxaca
in front of the Mexican consulate from noon-2pm. We’ll
arrive in Peterborough
by dinnertime.Please contact
kmahy@uoguelph.ca by this Wed. Nov. 1st if you are interested.*Kristi

————–CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION——————————————–

This conference aims to explore relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
peoples who have formed alliances or coalitions to fight for Indigenous rights, social
and/or environmental justice. Alliances and coalitions have become more common in the
past decades, yet little research has been done to understand these working
relationships, particularly what works well and what challenges are faced in forming
relationships.
This conference aims to attract both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal activists, leaders and
academics. To further our understanding of relationships, the conference program combines
both formal presentations and opportunities for discussions. Conference planners hope to
create a forum where experiences can be shared in a safe environment, where new
understandings can emerge and where new contacts can be made. It is a time to reflect on
how relationships have evolved and where they need to go in the future. Both
practitioners and academics will contribute to the richness of exchange in this
conference.

8—————————————————————- Hey GSEC,The Environmental Science Symposium is holding a BANDSTAND Fundraiser on FRIDAY November 10 in the Grad Lounge from 9:00 pm – 1:00 am. The event will cost $5. Student admin meeting- CONFIRMED TIME NO MORE CHANGES NOVEMBER 20th

We have some talking points from Fraser for meeting, that Becky can use. This might be a good opportunity for newer members to witness a student admin talk. Good opportunity to ask questions. Here are the details:
THERE IS A STUDENT/ADMIN ENERGY MEETING MONDAY NOV 20 AT 12-1PM.
Nancy Sullivan, John Miles, Brenda Whitside and others will be there. It would be great for GSEC members to attend especially those involved in the retrofit! Perhaps we can stress the importance of a multi-stake-holder committee instead of sporadic meeting between fragmented groups of students!

The student/admin meeting is this Monday NOV 20th from 12 – 1 pm in the EXEC boardroom on the 4th floor. If you go up the stairs nearest to the CSA (just beside safewalk), walk up to the 4th floor, and then go straight through the doors and down the hallway without making any turns, the boardroom will be on your right.

I also let the organizer know that there may be extra students attending who are leaders in energy issues on campus. So please feel free to invite GSEC people – I think the more people we get out, the better, especially because they’re talking about budget as well – of which energy use is a big part.

ORGANIC CONFERENCE AT GUELPH VOLUNTEERING BIG EVENT!!!

[as posted to GoodWork http://www.GoodWorkCanada.ca ]
[plus topical links and resources, below - ed ]
Volunteer OpportunitiesGUELPH ORGANIC CONFERENCE
Guelph, Ontario, Thurs Jan 25 – Sun Jan 28, 2007

http://www.guelphorganicconf.ca
Hello. I am the Volunteer Co-ordinator for the 26th Annual
Guelph Organic Conference. I am asking for your help in
assisting me at this conference during the period 25-28
January, 2007. If you yourself are not interested, perhaps
you could pass this message on to others who might be.
If you have already contacted me in regard to volunteering,
read on and find out more about the conference and about
specific duties.
Firstly, I suggest you check out the Conference website at
http://www.guelphorganicconf.ca . Then, decide which
days you can attend.
We cannot provide carpooling or billeting for the conference
due to prohibitive insurance costs. However, if a group of
you decides to come at the same time, let me know and I
will try to arrange compatible schedules.
Your volunteer commitment would consist of one or more
of the following days:
THURSDAY:
REAP CONFERENCE:
registration desk duties only, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, at
the latest, 2.5 hour minimum volunteer time, with free entry
to any workshops not conflicting with volunteer duties.
FRIDAY:
If you volunteer on Friday during the day, a minimum of
3-3.5 hours is required. You may attend for free the evening
Public Forum and any workshops that do not conflict with
your volunteer schedule. If you volunteer just for the
Public Forum on Friday evening, you will get into it for free.
If you wish to attend the Organic Buffet, you must pay
(and register beforehand).
SATURDAY:
If you volunteer on Saturday, you must do so for 3-3.5
hours. Then you are free to attend any of the workshops
that don’t conflict with your volunteer schedule.
SUNDAY:
If you volunteer on Sunday, you must do so for 2.5-3 hours.
Then you are free to attend any of the workshops that don’t
conflict with your volunteer schedule.

Please browse the website to see which workshops you
might be interested in attending/volunteering for and I will
try to accommodate you.

Obviously, the sooner you reply, the more likely you will
get what you want.

If there are any physical limitations, please tell me and
I’ll do my best to accommodate you. Also, if you have
any special skills, let me know.

Here is a list of typical volunteer duties:

* Workshop facilitators (check badges of guests, hand
out evaluations, assist the presenters)
* Registration desk: register guests, handle money
* Coat check
* Parking: must be able to be at conference for approx
6:00am on Saturday and be able to handle cold weather
* Set up: must be able to be at conference for approx
6:00 am on Saturday to help exhibitors set up for Trade Show
* Tear Down: must be able to stay til about 7:00 pm on
Sunday to help exhibitors tear down for Trade Show
* Audio-Visual: must be familiar with basic a-v equipment
(mikes, slide projectors, overhead projectors)
* Greeters: greet attendees on Saturday and Sunday am
and help guests register for conference
* Gofers: be at my beck and call (!) for your volunteer
time and also interview trade show attendees using a
brief survey
* Public Forum: check tickets and possibly hand out
questionnaires
I’m sure there are other duties that will arise, but those
are the basics.

It helps if you are a people-person and can handle a busy
job. It’s a pretty hectic 4-day event, with some slower
periods. Almost all the volunteers have enjoyed
themselves and have asked to be considered for future
volunteer duties.

If you’re interested in Organics, it’s a great way to
network and see what’s out there.

Wicked weekend winds show power of Prince ProjectDan Bellerose
Local News – Tuesday, October 31, 2006 @ 00:00
Brookfield Power Corp. continues to energize its sprawling Prince Wind Energy Project.Sixty-six football-field-size wind towers were set into commercial motion Sept. 21 and a further 60 three-bladed towers, standing 117 metres (383 feet), from base to furthest blade sweep, are about a month away from commercial contribution to the provincial energy grid.
“All the Phase 2 towers were erected by Sept. 29 and about half of them are energized and contributing to the grid,” said Jim Deluzio, general manager of Ontario Wind Operations for Brookfield Power. “This past weekend (with winds gusting up to 60 kilometres an hour Sunday) we were averaging 130 megawatts of generation on the site“We’re targeting Nov. 30 as the date for the entire project to go commercial and we remain on schedule.
The commercial wind park will have capacity to generate 189 MW of electricity once fully energized, including 99 MW from 66 towers in Phase 1 and 90 MW from 60 towers in Phase 2. That’s enough to power 40,000 homes.“We should be contributing energy to the grid 92 per cent of the time, peak production (189 MW) about 10 per cent of the time,” said Deluzio, whose company has invested nearly $400 million into the project. Each turbine, with the capacity to generate 1.5 MW of electricity, needs light to moderate winds, a minimum of 10 kilometres per hour, to begin generating electricity and 39-kilometre-per-hour winds for peak generation.Phase 1 includes 61 towers in Prince Township and five in Dennis Township while Phase 2 has 52 towers in Pennefather Township and eight in Dennis.Brookfield, parent company of Great Lakes Power Ltd., headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, expects to keep 15 operations and maintenance staff on site once the entire project is operational. The opening 99 MW phase of the Prince Project makes it a provincial co-leader with Erie Shores for wind energy capacity among Ontario’s 10 commercial wind parks. On a national scale, Prince and Erie Shores have the fourth-largest capacity of 55 parks, surpassed by a 149.4 MW project in Saskatchewan, a two-phase 103.95 MW park in Manitoba and a two-phase 99.7 MW site in Quebec.

When Phase 2 goes operational, Prince will have the largest installed capacity in the country, at least for a short time; leaders are ever-changing with new farms coming on-line on a regular basis.

Canada currently has 1,218 MW of installed wind capacity, including 319.71 MW in Ontario, enough to power 370,000 households, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association.

Brookfield, which acquired Brascan Power Corp. assets earlier this year, was granted a 20-year purchase agreement from the Ontario Power Authority for 99 MW of energy in November 2004, and secured the 90 MW contract a year later.

Construction began about a year ago. It included about 50 kilometres of access roads throughout the development, southwest and northeast of Red Rock Road, as well as 11.2 kilometres of transmission corridor.

The 210-ton towers were trucked to the site from throughout North America over four months this year, beginning in May, and erected upon 900-tonne foundations

ACTIVIST KILLEDas many who are reading this probably already know, an amazing companero,
journalist, anarchist, freedom fighter, earth firster, musician, and human being was shot
down and killed in cold blood, along with three other companeros, by officials employed
by the Mexican Government. His name was Bradley Will, and he was shot at the barricades
of Santa Lucia, in Oaxaca, Mexico
, as an indymedia reporter telling the story of the
amazing resistance of people of Oaxaca
. For over five months residents have occupied the
streets in an attempt to oust the corrupt, brutal governor Ruiz, and achieve the dignity,
freedom, and autonomy initially sought after by the teacher’s strike which was so
brutally repressed by that same governor.
While it is not yet clear which segment of the Mexican government is responsible, it is
clear from the many photos taken during the shooting that the chief of police, another
policeman, and important members of PRI party which supports Ruiz were involved. To add insult to injury, President Fox is now using the tragedy of these deaths as an
excuse to bring in federal forces, to restore “lawfulness.” We can only assume, given the
student massacre of ’68, the history of repression of the Zapatistas by Fox’s military,
his recent threats to invade Oaxaca
To add insult to injury, President Fox is now using the tragedy of these deaths as anexcuse to bring in federal forces, to restore “lawfulness.” We can only assume, given thestudent massacre of ’68, the history of repression of the Zapatistas by Fox’s military, his recent threats to invade Oaxaca, and the fact that his own government is instigated
in the murders, that Fox means to repress the rebellion.
Days before we US residents may have been watching Oaxaca, waiting to “see what
happens.” No longer shall we wait. We are now a part of this unfolding history. If the
Mexican Army invades Oaxaca, it will be with the financial and military support of the US

government. We can not let this happen. On Monday morning, October 30th, Mexican consulates around the US
To add insult to injury, President Fox is now using the tragedy of these deaths as anexcuse to bring in federal forces, to restore “lawfulness.” We can only assume, given thestudent massacre of ’68, the history of repression of the Zapatistas by Fox’s military, his recent threats to invade Oaxacawill attempt to open
their doors, to continue business as usual. But they will not succeed in doing so,
because we will be there to stop them. At every embassy, at every consulate, we will be
there, to remember Brad, to support the teacher’s strike, to fight alongside Oaxacans in
their struggle for self-determination and autonomy from the corrupt Mexican government.
This call to action against consulates is in line with what companeros from the APPO have
already called for earlier this week before this shooting.
We already know of many groups who are planning for Monday, and every day following if
necessary. Please spread this call to action as wide as possible. Spread the word: to
activists, teachers, students, earth firsters, latino social services centers, places
where day laborers gather, anti-racist action groups, food not bombs chapters, peace and
justice organizations, Zapatista solidarity groups, anarchist people of color chapters,
people you work with, your neighbors. Copy and paste this the whole world wide, and do so
quickly. And please translate a version of this to Spanish as well, and spread it around!
A directory of all the locations of all the Mexican consulates in the US and Canada can
be found at:

Hi GSEC,
My name is Golnoush Hassanpour. I’m in my 3rd year of the Enviro Sci program. I am one of
this year’s directors for the Environmental Science Symposium, which is taking place on
January 27th, 2007. This is a one day conference with high-profile speakers such as
Justin Trudeau, Jack Layton, and possibly the head of Green Peace. This year’s theme is
‘Media and the Environment’.
We are currently looking for volunteers to help us with fundraising and advertising as we
will need to raise $20 000 to cover the expenses of the symposium.
I was wondering if you’d be able to bring this up at your meetings and ask anyone
interested in volunteering to email us at envsymp@uoguelph.ca.

Select power BULLRING ENERGY
Select Power the company the Bull Ring is getting “green” energy from is going out of business, this requires that the CSA find another company to buy “green” energy from.  Bullfrog energy is what Jenny and the CSA are considering here is their write up.
They are Ontario’s only power supply company that gets power exclusively from wind energy and low impact hydro energy.
I placed their brochure on the GSEC blog. (link to pdf here on blog)

Dear Catharine and GSEC,

I have just been listening to an inspiring lecutre given by an architect who specializes
in energy and environmental conservation. He suggests that building an environmenatl
civilization may hinge on constructing ‘green’ designed buildings. His name is Peter
Busby and the lecture is accessible at the link below. I found his ideas pragmatic and
inspiring. Please listen to this; pay special attention to the award York University
received after having been awarded the ‘greenest’ building in the World’ for their newly
built computer science complex.

Perhaps you could forward this to Alistair.

Sincerely,

Roli Wilhelm
