As the school year wraps up, a new student body has been voted in, exams are starting up, and our Renewable Energy Projects are settling down for the summer.
March 19th and 20th was the Annual College Royal, and open house put on by the University to showcase our colleges and clubs, and to just get the community out. The Renewable Energy Group had a display up throughout the weekend, which received lots of attention, inquiries, and feedback. Many previous graduates of the University were impressed with our plans, and were also enthusiastic about ways in which they could include more renewable energy in their own lives.
Following College Royal were the student elections. The Renewable Energy Group had a referendum question asking students if they would pay a fifteen-cent levy each semester to provide the Bullring with wind energy. The referendum question was passed with phenomenal success! There will be a celebration party at the Bullring in early September to celebrate this success. All are welcome!
Last week, the Renewable Energy Group sent out letters to individuals and group supporters of the Retrofit Campaign, asking them to send letters to administration to promote the retrofit proposal. The Renewable Energy Group will be meeting soon with the newly appointed student Board of Governor members to discuss our goals and set out a clear line of communication with these individuals, who provide the voice of the student body to the BoG meetings.
A small group of students staying in Guelph for the summer will continue work on REG’s ongoing projects. If you are interested in participating, or want to receive the emails that will be exchanged, please write an email to the REG account (guelphcleanenergy@yahoo.com) requesting to be on the email list for the summer group. The Summer REG will be planning events for the upcoming school year, continuing work on the retrofit campaign, and brainstorming great new ideas for next year’s projects. This group will be very informal (it’s summer!).
REG bulletins are sent out by email, or online at http://gsec.ca/blog/ on a bi-weekly basis. Listen for other Renewable Energy Group news on Environment Radio, Wednesdays from 12 until 2pm on CFRU 93.3 FM.
